The philosophy of Velammal Group of Institutions is always rooted in thinking out of the box, considering students as the masters. Simultaneously, it keeps the values of compassion in mind to attain real success beyond material gains. This was the first lesson that Smt. Velammal, a young widow who lost her husband at the young age of 22, taught her children, and it is still kept intact.

Passing through several hardships that life offered, she took up the job of a maid in a village school to raise her three children. Today, she is immortalized under the banner of Velammal Group of Institutions, an educational group that revolutionized the art of education with innovative initiatives and interventions.

A woman of determination and perseverance, Smt. Velammal wanted her children to be responsible citizens with vision and values. Rather than enjoying the comfort zone of life, she envisaged her children to should have social commitment and spread light. She groomed her children with this philosophy in mind.

Smt. Velammal’s philosophy was the inspiration for her son Shri. M.V Muthuramalingam to think beyond the mundane life of survival, and pursue higher studies to become a civil engineering graduate in the 1960s. Instead of building up a lucrative career as an engineer, he decided to pursue a different dream that reflected the visionary gleam of his mother, and started a school at Mugappair, Chennai in 1986.

With just 186 students and 13 teachers, the school under the banner of Velammal Educational Trust (VET), had a humble beginning under a thatched roof.

More institutions were gradually established, and in 1995 Velammal Group of Institutions opened the first engineering college. Later, it opened Velammal Medical College Hospital and Research Institute in Madurai.

Today, it is an empire of education with more than 1.25 lakh students and 18,000 staff members on sprawling campuses all over Tamil Nadu. The Group with a global vision, environmental concern and humanitarian values has kindergartens to matriculation, CBSE and international schools, besides offering professional courses. Velammal Group is now dreaming of starting a university.
